The University of Derby is a public university in the city of Derby, England. It traces its history back to the establishment of the Derby Diocesan Institution for the Training of Schoolmistresses in 1851 and gained university status in 1992 as one of the new universities.
Derby city is located in the centre of the UK. London is about 125 miles south, while Manchester lies 90 miles to the north. The compact city of Derby is an economic powerhouse with global brands such as Rolls-Royce, Toyota and Bombardier, as well as a thriving creative sector. Cultural highlights include the international photography festival, Format, and the Feste arts festival. The campus at Buxton, which includes the grade II-listed Dome, is set in a charming spa town, which is home to Buxton Opera and Buxton festival .
The university provides over 300 study programmes at undergraduate level. Undergraduate programmes as well as short courses, foundation degrees and postgraduate degrees cover most academic disciplines and subdisciplines. Derby is proud of its personal touch: small classes, a personal tutor and a friendly atmosphere. The majority of its classes have fewer than 30 students. Derby offers single and joint honours in a wide range of areas including, arts, business, health, science, technology, computer gaming and leisure-industry-related subjects. More than 40 courses are available online. The university is engaged with regional business and has several initiatives in place to boost student employability, including around 90 incubation units.Currently the university is home to around 34,000 students in all areas of study.
The university's primary campus is located in the north-west of Derby and comprises three sites: Kedleston Road, Britannia Mill and Markeaton Street. The law school is located in the city centre. The university also has a campus located in Buxton, Derbyshire, which is referred to as the Devonshire Campus. Resources at the university include a range of facilities such as a spa, a hospital with robot patients, and a restaurant, which is operated by students. There is also a recording studio, various sporting facilities, and multiple bars and cafes.

The university highly recommends that students book their accommodation before arriving in the UK.
All international students who apply for accommodation by 31 July are guaranteed a room in halls of residence. After this date, if halls of residence are fully booked, the university will help students find suitable accommodation elsewhere.
The halls of residence are all within walking distance of campus and a regular bus service is also available.
Students do not have to move out of halls during the Christmas and Easter vacations.
